It's incredible what you've achieved for your comeback": Alcaraz's touching speech after his Rome triumph over Sinner
Carlos Alcaraz won the Rome Masters 1000 for the first time in his career this Sunday, defeating Jannik Sinner (7-6, 6-1).
By claiming his second clay-court Masters 1000 title of the season, the Spaniard once again showcased his mastery on the surface. During the trophy ceremony, he delivered a heartfelt speech, notably praising Sinner, who reached the final in his comeback tournament:
"First, I want to start by congratulating Jannik. I can't imagine how tough it must have been to be away from the tour for three months—for you, your family, and your team. I have to congratulate you because what you've achieved here for your return, in such a special tournament, is incredible.
I’ll never stop saying this: you’re an exceptional athlete and person. You work hard every day with your team to make them proud. So, congratulations to you, your family, and your team. [...]
I’d also like to thank my family. You know, we came here after an injury. I was at home recovering, and it wasn’t easy. We came here just to see how things would go. I’m surrounded by the right people—my family, my friends—who are always there for me. This trophy is more yours than mine. Without your efforts, this would have been impossible. So, thank you.
This tournament is truly amazing. Thanks to everyone who organizes and supports it. Thank you to the crowd for your support and for making me feel at home. I know you wanted Jannik to win, and I’m sorry about that. But thank you, because you were really respectful. In matches where I wasn’t playing an Italian, you showed me great support.
And congratulations to the country too, because you’re living a fantastic era in tennis with Lorenzo (Musetti), Jannik, and Jasmine Paolini. You have incredible talent. See you next year!
