"It's not a shocking defeat," Roddick discusses Sinner's loss to Bublik in Halle
At the ATP 500 tournament in Halle, Jannik Sinner was eliminated in the round of 16. The world No. 1 and defending champion in the German city was defeated by an in-form Alexander Bublik (3-6, 6-3, 6-4), who avenged his loss to the Italian after Sinner had beaten the Kazakh in the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros.
While this marks Sinner’s first loss to a player ranked outside the top 20 in two years, Andy Roddick isn’t concerned about the 23-year-old ahead of Wimbledon.
"Grass is probably the surface where Sinner feels the least comfortable, yet in my mind, he’ll still enter Wimbledon as one of the top three favorites for the title alongside Alcaraz and Djokovic.
Even after losing to Bublik, that won’t change. The format will be different, Sinner will have more room to play and will perform better in London than in Halle. The courts at Wimbledon are frankly better than those in Halle, especially on the sides where shadows create a slippery surface for hours.
Of course, he’ll want to do better, but this isn’t a shocking defeat. I think Bublik is one of the top ten, maybe fifteen grass-court players right now when he’s in form and engaged in the match," Roddick told Tennis Up To Date.
