It's the best way to say goodbye to this tournament and perhaps to tennis," Fognini proud of his performance against Alcaraz in his final Wimbledon
Fabio Fognini, 38, will retire at the end of the season after a career where the Italian showcased his immense talent, as well as his fiery temperament that often got the better of him.
Facing Carlos Alcaraz on Monday in the first round of Wimbledon, Fognini delivered an impressive performance, pushing the two-time defending champion to a fifth set. Though he ultimately fell to the world No. 2 in the decisive set, he expressed pride in his performance, acknowledging it could also be the final match of his career:
"It’s hard to say anything. It’s the best way to say goodbye to Wimbledon and perhaps to tennis. I’m happy, but so many emotions are running through my mind. I couldn’t have dreamed of a better way to bid farewell to this place."
Fognini also spoke about the standing ovation from the Centre Court crowd, which moved him deeply:
"It was very emotional. I cried in the locker room. I didn’t expect to play five sets against Alcaraz. I had no expectations, with everything that’s happened this year and my injury.
I was playing poorly and hadn’t won many matches. As I’ve said before, there’s no better way to play on this court against a great champion whom I deeply respect, because I know him well.
