"It's up to us to choose when to rest," says Norrie regarding the length of the ATP calendar
Cameron Norrie is back in the top 30. The 30-year-old Briton is currently ranked 27th in the ATP rankings, largely thanks to his final appearance at the ATP 250 tournament in Metz in early November.
The winner of the 2021 Indian Wells tournament finished the season very strongly, notably defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the second round in Paris. In an interview discussing the tennis calendar debate, Norrie believes it's up to the players to make the right decisions to avoid overloading their schedules.
"The calendar is packed, but it suits me"
"Regarding the calendar, we have no illusions. It is very busy, but on the other hand, it offers many opportunities to participate in tournaments, earn money, and make a living.
It's a packed calendar, but it suits me. And I think you don't have to play these ATP 250 tournaments. You have to play a minimum number of ATP 500 tournaments and the Masters 1000s during the season.
The Masters 1000s are almost all mandatory, but you can choose your schedule. In the past, I always wanted to play. I was really just testing the limits of my exhaustion, in reality.
I think you have to learn, know where you like to play, which tournaments you enjoy, and always adapt your schedule. Even though the annual program is long, it's up to us to choose when to rest, and I think it's up to us to learn," Norrie told the Daily Mail.
