Jacquet and Royer defeated in five sets, Halys benefits from Machac's withdrawal in the first round
After Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard's victory, four other French players were on the courts of Roland Garros for this first day of competition.
Quentin Halys, who had the honor of playing on the Simonne-Mathieu court, benefited from Tomas Machac's withdrawal in the second set, while he was leading 7-5, 4-1, to advance to the second round. He will face either Miomir Kecmanovic or Sebastian Baez there.
On court 6, Valentin Royer and Kyrian Jacquet followed one another, without success. In his first match at Roland Garros and in a Grand Slam tournament, Royer fell to Daniel Galan (7-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-7, 7-5) despite coming back from a two-set deficit.
Jacquet, who came through the qualifiers, put up a great fight against Nuno Borges, ranked 41st in the world. The French player appeared set for one of the day's upsets, leading two sets to none, before faltering at the end (3-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3). The match ended in a heated atmosphere beyond midnight.
In the women's draw, only Tiantsoa Sarah Rakotomanga was scheduled for the day. In her very first Grand Slam at 19 years old, she lost to qualifier Leyre Romero Gormaz (7-6, 6-2).
