"Jannik Sinner was right, we remain a strong team," Volandri reflects on Italy's Davis Cup success

Deprived of its star players, the Squadra Azzurra still secured a third consecutive Davis Cup in Bologna. A collective feat praised by Filippo Volandri, moved by the strength of the group and the team spirit that transcends absences.

Italy achieved the three-peat in Bologna. For the third consecutive season, the Squadra Azzurra has won the Davis Cup. This year, the situation was different because Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti were absent, demonstrating the great diversity of profiles in the transalpine team. Captain Filippo Volandri highlights the positive mindset of his group throughout the journey.

"This season, something extraordinary was accomplished with the Davis Cup victory. Winning three consecutive titles has been the feat of the year. With three different players, including many newcomers and beginners, it's a sign of a united team. Jannik (Sinner) was right.

We remain a strong team. This is a different victory from the others, perhaps the most moving along with the first in 2023. It's a different feeling but just as emotional.

"Even Sonego, who didn't play, worked very hard for the team"

I am fortunate to have so many players, because you don't always win the Davis Cup with the world number one or two, but with so many players, who were asked to play a role that they brilliantly fulfilled.

We are proud of it, we have a team that makes me suffer, but that, in the end, makes the difference to win. The true strength of the team lies in the fact that the players get along well. After the victory, I called them one by one to tell them how important they were.

Even a player like Sonego, very well ranked, but who ultimately didn't play, worked very hard for the team, alongside Matteo (Berrettini), so that Flavio (Cobolli) could feel at his best.

Over the last three years, the team, regardless of who is called up or who plays, supports and helps each other, and for me, that is very important," assured Volandri for La Gazzetta Dello Sport.

Hello I'm new

I am surprised about relatively low attendance at Roland Garros which was the most popular slam 20+ years ago. I myself love it as well as really loving aus and us opens. I don't care about Wimbledon, sometimes maybe I can watch women's tennis. I hate Wimbledon's white dress code, I feel like I am watching junior tennis...I watched very few matches like Graf davenport final in 1999 the last time.....
