Japan topple Great Britain in Davis Cup

The first round of the Davis Cup play-offs was an exciting affair. On the Asian courts, the Japanese nation got off to the best possible start in the first match.

Yoshihito Nishioka dominated Billy Harris without too much trouble (7-5, 6-1) before the British quickly reset the scoreboard. Jacob Fearnley dominated Kei Nishikori (6-3, 6-3).

On Saturday, Great Britain even took the lead for the first time by winning the doubles.

Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski beat Yosuke Watanuki and Takeru Yuzuki in a tight match (7-6, 7-6). Japan had no room for error, and Nishioka responded perfectly by dominating Fearnley (6-3, 7-6).

As in the first match between Norway and Argentina, a decisive fifth match will decide the winner.

Kei Nishikori dominated Billy Harris (6-2, 6-3) to send Japan through to the second round of the play-offs.

Japan have a good chance of challenging Germany in the next round, as the Germanic country currently leads Israel two wins to nil.
