Johnson on double-bounce controversies: "I think it's up to the player to point out the error"
In the Nothing Major podcast, former player Steve Johnson, following a question from an Internet user, spoke out on the recent controversies of points earned despite double rebounds.
The most recent of these concerned Iga Swiatek, who was awarded a point in her quarter-final against Emma Navarro at the Australian Open, despite a second rebound evident in the image.
Johnson: "I think it's up to the player to point it out. You're either on the ball, or you're not. We all know that. Tennis is a sport with integrity, you have to be able to have enough courage to recognize your mistakes.
Especially in today's world, where there are cameras everywhere and all the courts have hawkeye.
In these moments, unless the chair umpire is 100% sure of his decision, you go back to the point and mention that there has been a mistake.
We're too advanced in terms of technology to continue to have incorrect decisions.
It should be up to the player to raise his hand and say, 'I don't think I got it, let's take five seconds and have it checked.'"
