Kyrgios and Thompson withdraw from Washington tournament

Absent since the Miami Masters 1000, Nick Kyrgios was set to make his return to the main tour at the ATP 500 tournament in Washington, which he has won twice in his career (2019 and 2022). However, the Australian will ultimately have to postpone his comeback. The former world No. 13 has withdrawn from the American event.
Kyrgios had also planned to compete in doubles, and his partnership with Gaël Monfils had been confirmed in recent days. Now ranked 640th in singles, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist has been plagued by injuries over the past three years.
Kyrgios’ next target is likely the US Open, the Grand Slam tournament he will enter using his protected ranking. Another Australian player forced to withdraw from Washington is Jordan Thompson.
Still physically recovering after retiring at Wimbledon against Taylor Fritz, the world No. 39—who also withdrew from Los Cabos this week—does not want to take risks ahead of the two hardcourt Masters 1000 events and the US Open this summer. Aleksandar Kovacevic and Yoshihito Nishioka benefit from these withdrawals to enter the main draw.
It should be noted that several other withdrawals had already been announced by the tournament organizers in recent days, including Tommy Paul, Tomas Machac, Jakub Mensik, and Jacob Fearnley.
