Kyrgios calls for change: "Play best-of-three sets through to the Grand Slam quarter-finals".
Absent from the ATP circuit for a year and a half, Nick Kyrgios confirmed his return to the highest level in January.
In the meantime, the whimsical 29-year-old Australian has spoken of his desire to see some changes in tournaments.
The former world No. 13 believes that Grand Slam tournaments should introduce a new rule to give lower-ranked players a better chance of going further.
"I think it would be better to play Grand Slam matches best-of-three sets until the quarter-finals.
After that, best-of-five. That's what I'd like to change immediately," says Kyrgios.
"With this format, you'd see more players capable of reaching the quarters. The first week would also be more exciting.
How many times have we seen the best players in the draw lose the first set and end up winning the match somehow?" he asked the Australian Open website.
The Australian used a concrete example to illustrate his point: "When Li Tu won a set against Alcaraz at the US Open, you could say to yourself that it's a set all and we're going into a deciding set.
It could have changed Li's career completely. He beats Alcaraz on Arthur Ashe Court and he becomes a name. That would be something nice to change."
That's not all, as Nick Kyrgios also announced that he wanted more mixed doubles, to equip players with a microphone to improve the Fan Experience or to improve the quality of commentary on TV channels.
