Mannarino Dominates Thompson for the Seventh Time in His Career and Advances to the Third Round of the US Open

Adrian Mannarino wanted to join the three other French players of the day in the men's draw (Bonzi, Rinderknech, and Blanchet) in the third round. Moreover, Bonzi and Rinderknech will face each other for a spot in the round of 16.
On his side, Adrian Mannarino faced Jordan Thompson for the eleventh time on the main tour. The two had actually met just days earlier in Cincinnati, where the Frenchman won in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).
This time, the match was a bit tighter, but the Frenchman, who knows the Australian well, confirmed that he is a formidable opponent for Thompson. The 37-year-old player, who recently returned to the top 100, won in four sets (6-4, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 in 3 hours and 31 minutes).
With 41 winners and 36 unforced errors, the left-hander was solid and confirmed his success from the first round against Tallon Griekspoor. The player who secured his 7th victory in eleven matches against Thompson later reacted to his win just minutes afterward.
"It was a match that seemed really within my reach, and I got a bit caught up in my emotions at the end of the second set. I felt like I was really in control and then I tensed up stupidly.
Instead of staying focused, I started overthinking, dwelling on too many things. It's a shame to lose a set out of frustration. He's a player who often gives me trouble.
Whereas in Cincinnati I was really focused, here I had some ups and downs, but the most important thing is that I won. I managed to keep my cool during the key moments in the third and fourth sets. I'm happy with the result," he told L'Équipe.
For a spot in the round of 16, Mannarino will face Ben Shelton. The 2023 semifinalist eliminated Pablo Carreño Busta (6-4, 6-2, 6-4) in his second-round match. The Frenchman leads their head-to-head 2-1, but it was the world No. 6 who won their last encounter in late July during the second round of the Toronto Masters 1000 (6-2, 6-3).
