After a complicated 2024 season, Adrian Mannarino was keen to get off to a flying start at the first Grand Slam tournament of 2025.

Beaten in the first round in Auckland last week by Mariano Navone, the 36-year-old Frenchman, down to 75th in the world, had a tough first round in Melbourne.

Back in the top 20, Karen Khachanov faced Mannarino and was looking to kick-start his year after losing to Kei Nishikori in Hong Kong.

Despite a tight first set, Mannarino was unable to hold on and eventually lost in just over 2 hours 15 minutes (7-6, 6-3, 6-3).

The Russian, seeded number 19, continues his journey in Melbourne.

The 2023 semi-finalist will face Gabriel Diallo, who defeated Luca Nardi in five sets (6-7, 7-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2).

The Canadian will be seeking revenge on Khachanov after losing to him in the final in Almaty at the end of last season.

As for Mannarino, he'll be guaranteed to leave the top 100 at the end of the tournament. Still ranked 17th in the world at the start of 2024, the Frenchman was unable to defend the points from last year's round of 16.

The paradox dividing tennis: exhausted players and a saturated calendar, yet ever more exhibitions
The paradox dividing tennis: exhausted players and a saturated calendar, yet ever more exhibitions

Exhausted but omnipresent stars, ever-longer tournaments and exhibitions that have become a business in their own right: tennis is revealing its deepest contradictions, torn between spectacle and physical survival.

Since February 2022 and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Ukrainian sport has been heavily affected by human, structural and economic losses. Tennis has, of course, not been spared. While Ukrainian athletes have had to rethink their entire organization, an entire country, behind the scenes, has had to adapt and change its training conditions. This extends all the way to the highest level, where professional players have spoken out, trying as best they can to help their nation.

Is padel threatening tennis? Inside the revolution shaking up the established order

Born almost by accident in an Acapulco garden, padel has in fifty years become a global phenomenon that both fascinates and worries tennis. Its meteoric rise is already reshaping the landscape of racket sports.

A tennis player's income depends solely on his sporting results. In the event of injury, the daily life of those far from the Top 100 can become extremely complicated.

As we move to the end of this month and also closing out the year I am wishing all of those following me a Merry Christmas and a Happy/Healthy New Year.

Let's make that wish for all 2000 plus players hoping for 5 wins each day. Hoping ŵhen we open the results page to see all green, and no red. And especially NO CANCELED matches.

From me and my rotti JAZ, I bid you all good night, and see you in...

why did tennis tonic void predictions on the match between Chwalinska and Huergo at the Quito tournament? The match was played to completion and on time. If TT feels the match is one sided, and of course it was, then don't put it up for prediction. This is getting irritating.

The finals are here, and we scramble for the best finish. I've been chasing "King" all year and I was able to shrink the spread a little. Skelp is also closing the gap.

Seasons best to all the regulars in our league.

Will you all be back in the new year.?

Steffi Graf completed a Golden Slam (not just a career Grand Slam) when she was 19. She is the only person to accomplish that, winning the four majors plus Olympic gold the same calendar year.
