Masters 1000 Cincinnati: Sinner in charge, Atmane beats Fonseca, Tsitsipas eliminated by Bonzi

The results of the third round of the men's draw at the Cincinnati Masters 1000:

Fritz, seeded 4, dominated Italian Sonego in just under two hours with a score of 7-6, 7-5, becoming the first player to reach the round of 16 in all four ATP 1000 hard-court tournaments this year.

On the same court (P&G Center Court), the defending champion and world number one, Sinner, continued his progress against Canadian Diallo (6-2, 7-6). This marks his 9th consecutive victory, his 23rd in a row on hard courts.

On the Grandstand Court, Mannarino made a strong statement by eliminating the 13th seed, Tommy Paul, after a 2-hour 39-minute battle (5-7, 6-3, 6-4). The Frenchman had previously won against the American (victory in Bercy in 2024) and now takes the lead in their head-to-head clashes (2-1).

Having come through the qualifiers, the 37-year-old player, ranked 89th in the world, has lost just one set in his last five matches and is set to challenge the recent Wimbledon winner, Sinner. He also becomes the sixth oldest player to reach the round of 16 in Cincinnati.

The impressive day for the French did not stop there, as on Court 3, Bonzi knocked out Tsitsipas (6-7, 6-3, 6-4), further extending the poor run for the 2021 French Open finalist. At 29, the native of Nîmes qualified for the round of 16 of a Masters 1000 for the first time in his career, and will play Auger-Aliassime in the next round.

A performance replicated by his 23-year-old compatriot Terence Atmane, who dominated the young world tennis hopeful, Fonseca. He also qualified for the round of 16 of a Masters 1000 for the first time. He will face Taylor Fritz for a place in the quarter-finals. Thus, we have three unseeded French players in the round of 16 in Ohio.
