Mboko Upsets Osaka to Win Montreal WTA 1000
Victoria Mboko and Naomi Osaka faced off in a final that was unexpected for the audience, but to their great delight, as one of their compatriots was competing.
The match started poorly for Mboko. She lost the first set 6-2, failing to earn a single break point.
The second set was highly erratic between the two players, with 7 breaks in the 10 games played. Ultimately, the Canadian leveled the match at one set apiece.
Fueled by the home crowd, she shone in the third set, winning it 6-1 to claim her first WTA 1000 title after having played in only three such tournaments.
This victory will propel her up the rankings, placing her around the 25th spot in the world.
As for Osaka, she appeared deeply disappointed after her loss, even forgetting to congratulate her opponent during the trophy ceremony, though she made up for it in the post-match press conference.
