Medvedev Overcomes Opelka in Washington Opener

Daniil Medvedev kicked off his American tour with a hard-fought victory at the ATP 500 in Washington.
Facing Reilly Opelka in his debut match in the U.S. capital, Medvedev knew he would have to capitalize on the few opportunities that came his way. He struggled under Opelka’s dominance in the first set and saved a break point at 3-3 in the second.
The match then shifted in the Russian’s favor as he secured his first break of the match at 6-5 to level the score at one set apiece. The third set was a display of Medvedev’s strength, featuring two breaks, six aces, and an 87% first-serve points won.
With a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory, the world No. 14 and 2021 tournament champion advances to the round of 16. He will face Yibing Wu, who defeated Alexei Popyrin (7-5, 5-7, 6-3).
