Mensik on the New Generation: "They Are Ready to Bring Something New"
Czech tennis prodigy Jakub Mensik secured a spot in the semifinals of the Cap Cana Challenger in the Dominican Republic overnight. The 19-year-old player, currently ranked 57th in the world, strung together three victories against Cristian Garin (6-3, 6-4), Rei Sakamoto (6-4, 6-2), and Tomas Martin Etcheverry (6-3, 6-7, 6-3) and will face Damir Dzumhur for a place in the final.
During a press conference after his win against the Argentine, Mensik was asked about the ambitions of the new generation of talented tennis players who have already broken through on the main tour, such as Arthur Fils, João Fonseca, Learner Tien, and Alex Michelsen, and he also touched on the Big 3.
"It's a topic we could talk about for a long time. Obviously, in every era of tennis, new names, new generations, and new playing styles emerge.
The Big 3 dominated the tennis world for 20 years. Rafa (Nadal), Roger (Federer), and Novak (Djokovic) were at the top for 20 years. Novak is still here and fighting to win more big tournaments. It's insane.
Today, this new generation is ready to bring something new. It's hard to say exactly what defines us because we all have different styles.
In my opinion, the focus is more on physical qualities. Additionally, I think we will learn even more by facing the best players in the world. Players like João, Alex, and all the other young players, including myself, have the game to reach the highest level," Mensik told Live Tennis.
