A Prestigious Lineup for the Phoenix Challenger Semifinals

The Phoenix Challenger, a tournament that serves as preparation for the Miami Masters 1000 for some top 100 players, once again welcomed a strong field this year. The quarterfinals took place this Friday in Arizona, featuring two French players.

While Corentin Moutet was eliminated by Alexander Bublik (2-6, 7-6, 7-5) after a tense end to the match between the two, a second French player was on the courts: Hugo Gaston. The Toulouse native faced a tough challenge as he took on João Fonseca.

The 18-year-old Brazilian, who won his first ATP title in Buenos Aires in February, broke into the top 100 for the first time in his career after the Australian Open and is riding a wave of confidence. This was evident against Gaston, as Fonseca secured a straight-sets victory (6-4, 6-4).

There will therefore be no French players in the final four. Top seed Nuno Borges (world No. 36) defeated Colton Smith (6-4, 6-4) to advance to the semifinals. The last player to qualify for the Final 4 in the American city is Kei Nishikori. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the Japanese player overcame Flavio Cobolli (6-2, 4-6, 6-4).

The semifinal matchups are now set. This Saturday at 9 PM (French time), Nuno Borges will face Alexander Bublik, followed by a clash of generations between João Fonseca and Kei Nishikori for a spot in the final.

The impact of the war on tennis in Ukraine: financial aid, foundations, governing bodies and all‑round headaches
The impact of the war on tennis in Ukraine: financial aid, foundations, governing bodies and all‑round headaches

Since February 2022 and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Ukrainian sport has been heavily affected by human, structural and economic losses. Tennis has, of course, not been spared. While Ukrainian athletes have had to rethink their entire organization, an entire country, behind the scenes, has had to adapt and change its training conditions. This extends all the way to the highest level, where professional players have spoken out, trying as best they can to help their nation.

Omnipresent cameras, line judges on the verge of extinction, mistakes that persist nonetheless: technology fascinates as much as it divides. Tennis, at a crossroads, is still searching for its balance between progress and emotion.

A tennis player's income depends solely on his sporting results. In the event of injury, the daily life of those far from the Top 100 can become extremely complicated.

As we move to the end of this month and also closing out the year I am wishing all of those following me a Merry Christmas and a Happy/Healthy New Year.

Let's make that wish for all 2000 plus players hoping for 5 wins each day. Hoping ŵhen we open the results page to see all green, and no red. And especially NO CANCELED matches.

From me and my rotti JAZ, I bid you all good night, and see you in...

why did tennis tonic void predictions on the match between Chwalinska and Huergo at the Quito tournament? The match was played to completion and on time. If TT feels the match is one sided, and of course it was, then don't put it up for prediction. This is getting irritating.

The finals are here, and we scramble for the best finish. I've been chasing "King" all year and I was able to shrink the spread a little. Skelp is also closing the gap.

Seasons best to all the regulars in our league.

Will you all be back in the new year.?

Steffi Graf completed a Golden Slam (not just a career Grand Slam) when she was 19. She is the only person to accomplish that, winning the four majors plus Olympic gold the same calendar year.
