Monfils after beating Fritz: "I still feel capable of doing damage".
Gaël Monfils played an excellent match at the Australian Open on Saturday.
Facing world No. 4 Taylor Fritz, who has been in fine form since the end of last season, the 38-year-old Frenchman won in four sets (3-6, 7-5, 7-6, 6-3) to qualify for the last 16.
On court, moments after his prestigious victory, Monfils shared his impressions.
"It was an incredible match in an indescribable atmosphere. Taylor is a really strong player. I only gave up my serve once, when I played really badly.
But despite everything, I think I moved well on the court today. The plan was to stay on the baseline, not be afraid to hit the ball hard and dictate the tempo of the match.
In the end, I got the job done! I won the Auckland tournament and I feel lucky. Every day is different, but I keep working hard.
I continue to believe in myself and my team, and I still feel capable of doing damage. And now, here we are in the second week of the Australian Open," he declared to an enthusiastic crowd.
