Monfils announces his retirement: "Next year will be my last year as a professional player"
Aged 39 and the last of the 4 Musketeers still active, Gaël Monfils announced this Wednesday the date of his retirement. The Frenchman wishes to retire at the end of the 2026 season.
On his social media, he states: "I held a racket for the first time at 2 and a half years old and began my professional career at 18.
Now that I celebrated my 39th birthday last month, I would like to announce that next year will be my last year as a professional tennis player.
The opportunity to turn my passion into a profession is a privilege that I have cherished during every match and every moment of my 21-year-long career.
Although this game means everything to me, I am at peace with my decision to retire at the end of the 2026 tennis season."
Monfils also made sure to thank his fans, his great friends Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet, and Gilles Simon, as well as his loved ones.
