The match that concluded the day's schedule at the ATP 250 tournament in Stuttgart was an enticing one, pitting Alex Michelsen against Gaël Monfils. The 38-year-old Frenchman was one of several French players in action in Germany on Tuesday during the first round.

The task looked tough for Monfils against the American, ranked 35th in the world and seeded seventh in Stuttgart. The two had never faced each other before, but Michelsen proved to be the more consistent player in this encounter. With 32 winners and 22 unforced errors, the Californian native from Aliso Viejo had to work hard but ultimately had the final say.

Despite 14 aces and solid break-point efficiency (converting 2 out of 3), Monfils eventually faltered after conceding a break midway through the third set, which he couldn’t recover from. Michelsen triumphed (6-4, 4-6, 6-3), snapping a three-match losing streak on the ATP Tour.

He will face Justin Engel for a spot in the quarterfinals.
As for Monfils, he was the only French player to fall on German grass this Tuesday. Before him, Arthur Rinderknech, Corentin Moutet, Quentin Halys, and Pierre-Hugues Herbert had all secured their spots in the round of 16. Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard had already qualified on Monday after defeating Roman Safiullin.

Exhausted but omnipresent stars, ever-longer tournaments and exhibitions that have become a business in their own right: tennis is revealing its deepest contradictions, torn between spectacle and physical survival.

The impact of the war on tennis in Ukraine: financial aid, foundations, governing bodies and all‑round headaches

Since February 2022 and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Ukrainian sport has been heavily affected by human, structural and economic losses. Tennis has, of course, not been spared. While Ukrainian athletes have had to rethink their entire organization, an entire country, behind the scenes, has had to adapt and change its training conditions. This extends all the way to the highest level, where professional players have spoken out, trying as best they can to help their nation.

Omnipresent cameras, line judges on the verge of extinction, mistakes that persist nonetheless: technology fascinates as much as it divides. Tennis, at a crossroads, is still searching for its balance between progress and emotion.

As we move to the end of this month and also closing out the year I am wishing all of those following me a Merry Christmas and a Happy/Healthy New Year.

Let's make that wish for all 2000 plus players hoping for 5 wins each day. Hoping ŵhen we open the results page to see all green, and no red. And especially NO CANCELED matches.

From me and my rotti JAZ, I bid you all good night, and see you in...

why did tennis tonic void predictions on the match between Chwalinska and Huergo at the Quito tournament? The match was played to completion and on time. If TT feels the match is one sided, and of course it was, then don't put it up for prediction. This is getting irritating.

The finals are here, and we scramble for the best finish. I've been chasing "King" all year and I was able to shrink the spread a little. Skelp is also closing the gap.

Seasons best to all the regulars in our league.

Will you all be back in the new year.?

Steffi Graf completed a Golden Slam (not just a career Grand Slam) when she was 19. She is the only person to accomplish that, winning the four majors plus Olympic gold the same calendar year.
