Monfils Overcomes Marozsan Hurdle and Advances to the Second Round in Miami
Gaël Monfils qualified for the second round of the Miami Masters 1000 this Wednesday by defeating Fabian Marozsan in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 6-4).
Eliminated only in the third round at Indian Wells by Grigor Dimitrov, the Frenchman continues to display strong form on American soil.
Facing Marozsan, a quarterfinalist in Florida last year, Monfils did not fall into the trap, delivering a solid first set with 17 unforced errors and 4 winners. Although he dipped slightly in the second set, he regained his composure in the third set with an early break that secured his qualification for the next round.
A solid match (38 winners, 19 unforced errors, and 15 aces) that will boost his confidence as he prepares to face Jiri Lehecka in his next match.
For Marozsan, the ranking drop will be harsh, as the Hungarian will lose at least 21 places in the ATP rankings (from 59th to 80th) after losing the points from his quarterfinal run.
