Monfils reflects on his 2016 US Open semi-final: "I have no regrets".
In 2016, Gaël Monfils had an impeccable run at the US Open, reaching the semi-finals of the last Grand Slam of the season without dropping a single set.
However, he fell to Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals, the world No.1 and the Frenchman's bête noire throughout his career.
Beaten in four sets (6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4) that day, Monfils's level of play was well below everyone's expectations.
Booed by some of the New York crowd, he waited until the third set to get back into the match. But his awakening was not enough to worry the Serb, who was at the time in search of a second consecutive title after 2015.
In a question-and-answer session on his X account on Sunday, Monfils gave his opinion on this very special match: "I have no regrets. Talking about this semi-final, I actually played well, if you look closely.
Some people wanted to emphasize things other than the performance.
But those other things are simply performance too."
