Mouratoglou Analyzes Sinner's Return: "Alcaraz and Zverev Had the Chance to Gain Points, Yet They Failed"
Sinner's return will take place at the Rome Masters 1000 on May 8. While the Italian's three-month absence seemed to give other players an advantage, the 23-year-old will rejoin the tour still as the world No. 1, as neither Alcaraz nor Zverev managed to capitalize on his hiatus.
In an interview shared by Tennis World Italia, Patrick Mouratoglou discussed the three-time Grand Slam winner's situation:
"For Jannik, there’s already good news: during his absence, no one stole his spot. Novak reached a final, but he didn’t win it. Carlos (Alcaraz) and Alexander (Zverev) didn’t perform well.
If Alcaraz had won Indian Wells and Miami—which was within his reach—he would have faced Sinner’s return with more confidence.
Jannik won’t be affected by these three months. We’ve seen what he had to deal with and, in the meantime, how much he managed to win. He has the mindset of a No. 1. He was the strongest three months ago, and he will be upon his return.
Meanwhile, the others not only had the chance to gain points but also to win tournaments and build confidence to face him with more determination. Yet, they failed."
Regarding the departure of one of his coaches, Darren Cahill, at the end of the season, the Frenchman shared his thoughts:
"I don’t know if Vagnozzi will need someone else by his side, but, without naming names, if a new addition comes in, they’ll have to be an experienced figure. I think that’s the logic that led to Cahill’s inclusion.
Harmony is one of the keys to success in Sinner’s team, so it will be crucial for newcomers to integrate well and possess strong communication skills."
