Moutet into the main draw, Herbert and Rinderknech fall in second round of Monte-Carlo qualifiers
Three French players were competing for a spot in the main draw of the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 on Sunday, April 6. The first among them was Corentin Moutet. After defeating Gabriel Diallo in three sets, the 25-year-old aimed to confirm his form, but the task seemed daunting against David Goffin. The Belgian, who had previously dominated Yannick Hanfmann, brought experience on the surface.
As the day before, the two men delivered a three-set battle, but in the end, it was the Frenchman who proved stronger. Having pulled off a surprise win against Carlos Alcaraz in Miami in recent weeks, the Belgian thought he would secure his place in the main draw when leading 5-2 in the decisive set. However, Moutet ultimately prevailed (2-6, 7-6, 7-5) and will learn his first-round opponent in the coming hours.
Meanwhile, Pierre-Hugues Herbert was outplayed by Daniel Altmaier. The German, who had defeated Jaume Munar the previous day and excels on clay, secured his place in the main draw with a straight-sets victory over the Frenchman (7-6, 6-3).
Finally, Arthur Rinderknech fared no better than Herbert. Despite putting up a strong fight against clay specialist Mariano Navone, the 29-year-old—who had knocked out Luca Nardi in the first round of qualifying—succumbed (6-0, 6-7, 6-1), marking his tenth defeat in thirteen matches since the start of 2025.
Thus, only Moutet managed to advance through qualifying in the 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 for the French contingent. Seven players will represent France on the Monaco clay this year: Richard Gasquet, Gaël Monfils, Alexandre Muller, Ugo Humbert, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Corentin Moutet, and Arthur Fils.
