Mpetshi Perricard and Goffin hold their own at Wimbledon
As top seeds in the qualifying draw, David Goffin and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard made a successful debut on Monday. Faced with opponents well within their reach, they both made light work of the task, winning comfortably in two sets.
The Frenchman, seeded number 1 in the draw, showed no mercy to his compatriot Ugo Blanchet (6-2, 7-5).
Brilliant on serve (12 aces, 92% of points won on first ball) and very incisive in the exchange, he didn't have to work hard to reach the second round, where he will face another of his compatriots, Antoine Escoffier (212th).
David Goffin had an even easier first round. Winning in less than an hour, he gave Marc Polmans a lesson in tennis (6-3, 6-1).
Having won a Challenger title last week (at Ikley), the Belgian seems to be regaining his confidence and has now won for the 6th time in a row. Very solid in the rallies and aggressive when needed (5 aces, 28 winners, 12 unforced errors), he made life miserable for his Australian opponent.
In the second round, he will face Japan's Yasutaka Uchiyama (203rd).
