"My body couldn't keep up anymore": Nadal opens up one year after retirement
A year ago, Rafael Nadal bid farewell to professional tennis, leaving behind a legendary career, marked by 22 Grand Slam titles, including 14 French Opens.
The former world No. 1 has since made a few public and media appearances. For example, he will be the special guest on the show 'Universo Valdano' this Monday evening on the Spanish channel Movistar Plus.
In this interview with journalist Jorge Valdano, Nadal opened up about his retirement, with a first excerpt revealed:
"I really loved what I did, I want to make that clear. I didn't retire out of weariness or lack of motivation. No, I stopped because my body couldn't keep up anymore.
I still enjoyed being on the court. After my surgery, I was assured that a full recovery was possible, and I had to give myself time to be sure.
For me, a sacrifice is something you don't want to do. In that case, I never made great sacrifices. I made immense efforts. But sacrifices, very few. Because I enjoyed what I did. I never felt like I was missing out on anything."
