"My confidence and mindset were not at their best at all," Wawrinka honest after his defeat in Gstaad
After his elimination against Shevchenko (6-3, 6-2) in Gstaad, his 11th first-round exit this season, Wawrinka shared his thoughts on his current situation. At 40 years old, the Swiss player knows he is very close to hanging up his racket:
"I had several opportunities at the start of the match. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take the lead. I couldn’t break. I put myself under pressure. As soon as you hesitate in the game, things get complicated. In any case, I’m nearing the end of my career, I’m not going to make excuses for myself. I lost 6-3, 6-2—the score says it all, the confidence and focus just weren’t there at all."
Despite reaching the final at the Aix-en-Provence Challenger and the semifinal in Iasi, he has only won 11 out of 27 matches this season.
