"My conversations with Federer are what left the biggest mark on me," says Shelton
During a press conference, Ben Shelton discussed match tactics and game analysis. The American also mentioned Roger Federer, with whom he had previously spoken, notably during the Laver Cup.
He stated: "It’s essential to be able to adjust your tactics mid-match, especially during long matches like Grand Slams.
The key is to have a basic game plan you’re comfortable with and can rely on in tense situations.
Having go-to plays for high-pressure moments is crucial, but you also need to stay open-minded and adapt your overall strategy.
Fritz has a very analytical mind; he knows exactly why he wins or loses as soon as he steps off the court. He discusses adjustments with his team during the match, pointing out what he thinks needs to change.
Tiafoe is also great at making quick decisions; he processes everything incredibly fast. But for me, what stood out the most were my conversations with Federer.
He follows tennis constantly, has an incredible ability to simplify the game, and is extremely passionate about the sport. I’ve talked to him several times about tennis tactics, and I was truly impressed."
Shelton will play Lorenzo Sonego this Monday for a spot in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.
