New Feat and First WTA 500 Quarterfinal for Jacquemot After Tough Battle Against Mertens
Elsa Jacquemot, only 22 years old, made a strong impression by reaching the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 in Guadalajara. After a decisive victory against Sakkari, she confirmed her form against Mertens, the top seed in Mexico.
Rain has been the major player this week at the WTA 500 in Guadalajara. During her first two rounds, against Maria Sakkari and Elise Mertens, Elsa Jacquemot had to return to the court for two consecutive days to complete her matches.
After her clear victory against the Greek player (6-2, 6-0), the Frenchwoman saw her match against the Belgian interrupted midway through the second set, after having lost the first.
But despite all the weather disruptions, Jacquemot did not lose her focus. With a total of six breaks, the world No. 83 (her highest career ranking to date) turned the situation around against the player ranked in the top 30 (22nd).
In 2 hours and 29 minutes of play, the 22-year-old player prevailed (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) and qualified for her very first WTA 500 quarterfinal. To reach the final four, she will have to overcome Tatjana Maria, who eliminated Zeynep Sönmez (6-4, 6-2) and Rebecca Marino (6-3, 7-5).
This success also allows Jacquemot to temporarily climb to 72nd in the WTA Live Rankings. Also worth noting is the elimination of the No. 2 seed, Veronika Kudermetova, who fell to Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva (6-4, 6-2), while the defending champion Magdalena Frech defeated Lucrezia Stefanini (6-1, 7-6).
