WTA 500 Guadalajara: Jacquemot Upsets Maria to Reach First Main Tour Semifinal
Elsa Jacquemot continues to shine at the WTA 500 tournament in Guadalajara after staging a comeback against Tatjana Maria in the quarterfinals. Despite a challenging first set, the 22-year-old Frenchwoman showed impressive resilience to win in three sets and reach her first main tour semifinal.
Jacquemot’s strong run in Guadalajara continues. After her victories over Maria Sakkari and Elise Mertens, the 22-year-old French player, who was competing in her first WTA 500 quarterfinal at this Mexican tournament, overcame the experienced Tatjana Maria (3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in 2 hours and 12 minutes).
After a tough end to the first set where she lost four consecutive games, Jacquemot regrouped in the final two sets. Despite a late scare in the match (Maria came back from 1-4 to 4-4 in the deciding set), the Lyon native ultimately secured her spot in the semifinals.
She, who will become at least the French No. 2 after the tournament, will face Emiliana Arango in an attempt to reach the final. The Colombian defeated Marina Stakusic (6-2, 6-3), who had earlier eliminated Jelena Ostapenko in three sets.
The other semifinal will feature 17-year-old Iva Jovic against Czech wild card Nikola Bartunkova. The latter ousted defending champion Magdalena Frech (7-5, 6-4), while Jovic saved a match point to overcome Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva (6-3, 3-6, 7-6).
