"Not having the world number 1 is something that affects us," Ferrer discusses Alcaraz's withdrawal in the Davis Cup
Spain is aiming this week in Bologna for its first Davis Cup title since 2019. However, before facing the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals in the coming hours, captain David Ferrer learned of Carlos Alcaraz's withdrawal, who suffered a thigh injury during the ATP Finals and was forced to play with a bandage in the final against Jannik Sinner. The world number 1, who has not recovered in time, will therefore not participate in the Final 8 this season. An event that Ferrer reacted to in a press conference.
"Carlos (Alcaraz) had an edema since Turin, and it worsened during the final. The doctors arrived yesterday, performed an MRI, and Carlos, after discussing with his medical team and our medical team, decided that the risk was too great and, of course, it is the medical team that decides. It is certainly a shame for the team: not having the world number 1 is something that affects us, we know that.
But we are here: we are in the final thanks to all of them, and that is what I want to emphasize. They will compete and we will have our chances. Yesterday was a difficult day, because he will not be with us, but today, I see the light again. I trust in our ability to do great things," Ferrer assured Punto de Break.
Spain will therefore be represented by Jaume Munar, Pablo Carreño Busta, Pedro Martinez, and Marcel Granollers to try to overcome the Czechs.
