Osaka withdraws, Tauson wins title at Auckland tournament
Before the start of the ATP tournament in the same city on Monday, let's take a look at the outcome of the WTA tournament in Auckland.
Clara Tauson and Naomi Osaka, who have enjoyed a faultless run so far, face off for the title in New Zealand.
The Japanese, with her experience of finals on the circuit, got off to the best possible start and won the first set 6 games to 4.
However, the four-time Grand Slam winner soon retired. An abdominal injury forced Osaka to withdraw.
Tauson wins the third title of her career, the first since the Luxembourg Open in 2021. The 22-year-old Dane will move up to 41st in the world rankings on Monday.
"First of all, I have to say I'm sorry about this final. Naomi played some very good tennis today. It was the worst final I've played emotionally.
I can't feel satisfied. I'm just sad about what happened. I'm happy with the week I've had, happy to have won, without really being happy," Tauson reacted on court after her success.
For her part, Naomi Osaka seems to have enjoyed her stay in Auckland, even if the outcome was not what she had hoped.
"I wanted to thank everyone for welcoming me to such a beautiful city. I've really enjoyed playing here. I'm sorry about the way it ended. I'm grateful to be here," said Osaka.
