Iga Swiatek still can't find a way past Jelena Ostapenko, falling to the Latvian in Saturday's quarterfinals of the WTA 500 in Stuttgart (6-3, 3-6, 6-2).
Facing her nemesis on tour, Swiatek was the underdog in this match, even though it was their first-ever encounter on clay.
The Pole was far from her best on serve (50% first serves, 8 double faults) and ultimately succumbed to Ostapenko's powerful game, exemplified by the match point where the Latvian gradually forced the world No. 2 into an error.
With this sixth career win over Swiatek, Ostapenko advances to her first-ever semifinal in Stuttgart. She will face Ekaterina Alexandrova tomorrow for a spot in the tournament final.
