Panatta on Musetti: "At this level, talent is no longer enough"
Tennis is Italian this week. The prestigious ATP Finals have begun and are being played in Turin, with two Italians among the world's top eight players: Jannik Sinner, now a global star, and Lorenzo Musetti, a surprise guest after Novak Djokovic's withdrawal.
Speaking on the show "La Domenica Sportiva," Adriano Panatta, the 1976 Roland-Garros champion and a former star of Italian tennis, discussed the chances of his two compatriots:
"If Musetti reaches the semi-finals, that would already be an excellent result. But he will have to raise his level, because what he has shown in recent weeks will not be enough. The level here is very high and talent is no longer enough. This tournament does not forgive. If Musetti wants to break into the top four, he must make a mental and technical leap.
As for Sinner, I have seen many fans these days with an incredible desire for tennis. It's incredible how much he has brought a new energy to our sport. The credit clearly goes to him. He has shown the way. But for the movement to grow, everyone, including Musetti, must raise their level of play."
As a reminder, Musetti and Sinner will begin this Monday, November 10th: the first at 2:00 PM (local time) against Fritz and the second from 8:30 PM (local time) against Auger-Aliassime.
