Paolini: "I've never played a player as strong as Swiatek".
Jasmine Paolini may have played her best tennis, but there was little she could do against Iga Swiatek in the French Open final on Saturday (6-2, 6-1). Like all the Pole's opponents this year in Paris, with the exception of Naomi Osaka in the 2nd round (7-6, 1-6, 7-5), the Italian could only observe the gap between her own level of play and that of the world No.1.
Jasmine Paolini: "Yes, I got off to a good start. But she (Swiatek) plays with incredible intensity. When she's here (in Paris), she hits the ball with so much spin, she moves so well. You'd have to ask her, but I think this is her favorite surface and her favorite court. So it was a big challenge.
But I have no regrets, it's great to play these matches. It can help me improve even more. I'll have to talk to my coach to understand a bit more what happened, but I think we played some really fast points with an incredible level of tennis. I don't think I've ever played a player as strong as Iga.
She (Swiatek) didn't let me play my game. I was a bit nervous, of course, but once I was on the court I felt great. It's a challenge, but I hope I'll have other chances to face her in the future. I'll try to improve my game a bit to make things a bit more complicated for her (laughs)."
