"Paris will help convince him that he's at least as good as Alcaraz," Wilander analyzes Sinner's chances of winning the title at Wimbledon
This Sunday, it's time for the grand final of the Wimbledon tournament between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. The two best players in the world have held their ground throughout the fortnight in London and will now battle for the ultimate prize, promising a spectacular showdown, much like their 5.5-hour epic at Roland-Garros last month.
After their epic battle on the Parisian clay, the two will now compete for the title at Wimbledon. Mats Wilander shared his thoughts on Sinner's chances of defeating the two-time defending champion.
"Before Wimbledon, there were still questions: Will Jannik Sinner be a great grass-court player or not? Now, we have the answer: Sinner will be a title contender at Wimbledon every year.
Like Daniil Medvedev, Jannik has won everything on hard courts. But while the Russian has clear limitations on grass and clay, that's not the case at all for the Italian. Today, he’s a player who can win every Grand Slam, no matter the surface.
On grass, Jannik manages to stick to his baseline game without struggling. That’s easy to do on hard courts but much harder on grass because of the occasional unpredictable bounces. You have to be able to trust the surface.
His movement quality is key. Sliding as much as Jannik does could be a problem on grass, but it’s not at all. He moves just as well on this surface as he does on hard and clay courts—it’s quite remarkable.
His mindset should be: ‘You should have won in Paris, now go win Wimbledon.’ I don’t think he’s plagued by a lack of confidence or negative thoughts.
On the contrary, Paris will help convince him that he’s at least as strong as Carlos (Alcaraz) and that he has a real chance to beat him," Wilander analyzed for L'Équipe this Sunday, just hours before the final.
