Parry Ends Kvitova's Career in the First Round of the US Open

Petra Kvitova, former world No. 2 and two-time Wimbledon champion (2011, 2014), has bid farewell to professional tennis.
Competing in a Grand Slam for the last time in her career, the 35-year-old Czech player fell in the first round of the US Open to Diane Parry (6-1, 6-0), in a sparsely filled Grandstand on this Monday morning in New York. Parry, ranked 107th in the world, did not need to play her best tennis to defeat a completely overwhelmed Kvitova (21 unforced errors, 11 points won on her serve).
The Frenchwoman thus earns the second victory of her career at Flushing Meadows and advances to the second round against Madison Keys or Renata Zarazua.
Kvitova, for her part, ends a 19-year career filled with success. In addition to her two Wimbledon titles, the native of Bilovec claimed 29 other WTA titles (including 9 WTA 1000 events and the 2011 WTA Finals) and six Billie Jean King Cups.
She returned to competition just a few months after giving birth to her first child, but her struggle to regain her form (1 win and 8 losses before the US Open) convinced her to announce her retirement.
