Pegula: "Compared to Sabalenka and Swiatek, consistency is my strength"
Jessica Pegula, who has won two titles on American soil this year (Austin and Charleston), is set to begin the European clay season as the world No. 3.
The American, who has reached at least the quarterfinals in six of the eight tournaments she has played this season, expressed satisfaction with her consistency during a press conference:
"I’ve always believed in my game, but I had a lot of doubts. I didn’t want to have big results without also having consistency. It’s tough to be among the elite and have to back up your results week after week.
I thought I’d go through a rough patch, that I wouldn’t get results. But I surprise myself. I think I’m lucky in that regard because I’ve been among the top players for a while now.
I’ve managed to establish myself among the world’s top five, go deep in Grand Slams, and win WTA 1000 titles.
I never imagined I’d be able to achieve all this while maintaining consistency. When I was younger, it wasn’t my strength. I don’t know how I managed to overcome that. Maybe I’m more relaxed now.
Compared to Aryna (Sabalenka) and Iga (Swiatek), consistency is my strength. Even though I haven’t won a Grand Slam, I’m happy to keep delivering strong results week after week."
