Three French players were entered in the draw of the Phoenix Challenger, which takes place during the second week of the Indian Wells tournament.
Hugo Gaston was the first to qualify for the second round this Wednesday by defeating Adam Walton in two sets (6-2, 6-4).
On the same court, Corentin Moutet then prevailed against the returning Nikoloz Basilashvili (6-3, 6-2).
On the other hand, Arthur Rinderknech was defeated by Reilly Opelka after a closely contested match (4-6, 7-5, 7-5). The Frenchman may regret the numerous break points he failed to convert (2/11 throughout the match), especially towards the end of the third set.
In the second round, Gaston will face Opelka, while Moutet will take on Pedro Martinez, the tournament's third seed.
