"Playing the final is kind of a priority for me," Venus Williams shares her ambitions for the US Open mixed doubles
Venus Williams has made her return to the WTA tour in recent weeks. At 45 years old, the American secured her first win in two years during the first round of the WTA 500 tournament in Washington against Peyton Stearns, before losing to Magdalena Frech in the next round.
However, in Cincinnati, the former world No. 1 couldn’t keep the momentum going and was eliminated in her opening match against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. Williams’ next goal will now be the mixed doubles at the US Open.
The American champion will compete in the new format alongside Reilly Opelka. Moreover, she has no plans to just make an appearance in New York, as she confirmed in recent statements.
"Usually, I don’t play much after the US Open, so you probably won’t see me after the tournament this year. But for next year, don’t count me out too much! The only major final I’ve never played is the mixed doubles final at the US Open.
So, it’s kind of a priority for me to play it, because it’s the only thing I’ve never accomplished in tennis. I’ve always been very close to the winner’s circle in everything I’ve done throughout my career," Venus Williams assured in an interview with Tribuna.
