Powerless, Cornet bids farewell to professional tennis

A page in the history of French tennis has been turned on the Philippe Chatrier court. A professional since 2006, Alizé Cornet played her last match (the 1002nd of her career) on May 28, 2024. As we all knew, the draw was not kind to the Frenchwoman, and it was only logical that she should lose, swept aside by world number 7 Qinwen Zheng (6-2, 6-1 in 1h23).

Highly nervous, Cornet simply didn't have the weapons to cope with an extremely solid opponent (24 winners, 19 unforced errors). Quarter-finalist in Rome, Zheng held her ground perfectly, forcing the Frenchwoman to play far from her line.

Fighting to the bitter end and even saving several match points, it came as no surprise when Cornet bid farewell to tennis, in front of a packed Philippe Chatrier court. As she puts her rackets away, it's simply a question of saying thank you and, above all, goodbye to one of the most resilient players women's tennis has ever known.

Thank you, Alizée!
