Ramos-Viñolas explains his upcoming retirement: I realized the years had passed and I had to train hard to stay fit

Albert Ramos-Viñolas is living his final months as a professional tennis player. The 37-year-old Spanish left-hander, currently ranked 234th in the world, announced at the end of March that he would retire at the end of 2025.

Defeated by Holger Rune in the first round of the Barcelona tournament, where he had been granted a wildcard (7-5, 6-4), the 2017 Monte-Carlo Masters finalist spoke at a press conference, reflecting on the decisions that led him to end his career.

"My initial idea wasn’t to retire. I suffered a muscle fiber tear, pubic osteopathy... I realized the years had passed and that I had to train hard to stay fit.

I don’t have a big serve, so I needed to prepare well. And when I do, I feel pain. All of this led me to decide it was time to stop. After a whole lifetime, you have to mature. My mind needs mental preparation.

The best way to do this is to have one final year to enjoy as much as possible and play on the court the way I want to," he elaborated, as reported by *Relevo*.
