Ramos-Vinolas Snubbed by Madrid Masters 1000 Management for a Final Wild Card
Earlier this month, Albert Ramos-Vinolas announced that 2025 would be his last season on the professional tour, as his body could no longer handle the relentless schedule of matches and tournaments.
He received a wild card last week in Barcelona, where he was defeated in the first round by the eventual champion, Holger Rune. David Ferrer, the tournament director, organized a brief tribute ceremony for him after the match. The Spaniard was likely hoping to continue his farewell tour this week at the Madrid Masters 1000, but that won’t be the case.
José Moron, editor of the website Punto Debreak, revealed that IMG (which owns the Madrid tournament) briefly considered awarding a wild card to Ramos-Vinolas before ultimately granting it to Marin Cilic, a 2019 quarterfinalist and former world No. 3.
The other players who received wild cards for the main draw are Pablo Carreno Busta, Martin Landaluce, Federico Cina, and Coleman Wong.
This decision has upset Spanish fans, who are demanding an explanation from tournament director Feliciano Lopez.
