Ranking - Gauff eliminated, Sabalenka could reclaim her runner-up spot
Aryna Sabalenka has a great opportunity this week.
Coco Gauff, clearly still reeling from her failure at the Paris Olympics, was eliminated prematurely in Toronto.
Opposed to an in-form Diano Shnaider, the American missed her match overall, losing in two sets (6-4, 6-1).
This setback could cost her dearly, as if Sabalenka were to qualify for the final in Canada, she would then steal second place in the world from Gauff.
Back from injury last week, the Belarusian got off to an excellent start in Toronto, easily overcoming Yuan (6-2, 6-2) and then Boulter in the last eight (6-3, 6-3).
With her new-found solidity, she is two wins away from regaining second place in the WTA rankings.
