Roland-Garros 2025: Zheng First Player to Qualify for the Round of 16
This Friday marks the start of the third round in both singles draws at Roland-Garros. On the women's side, the first player guaranteed to advance to the round of 16 is Zheng Qinwen. The Chinese world No. 7 managed to defeat young Canadian qualifier Victoria Mboko (18 years old).
On this hot day at Roland-Garros, Zheng dominated the rallies, preventing her opponent from finding her rhythm (5 winners for Mboko compared to 17 for the Chinese player). In the end, last year's Olympic gold medalist secured victory after saving break points in her final service game (6-3, 6-4).
After her wins against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (6-4, 6-3) and Emiliana Arango (6-2, 6-3), Zheng confirmed her form against Victoria Mboko and becomes the first player in the draw to reach the second week.
This is the second time in her career she has reached this stage at Roland-Garros after 2022, when she was defeated by Swiatek. For a spot in the quarterfinals, she will face the winner of the match between Dayana Yastremska and Liudmila Samsonova.
