Rune remains optimistic: "If I'm physically fresh, I can return to my best level"
Holger Rune saw his run in Monte-Carlo come to an early end. The Dane, ranked 12th in the world, was forced to retire in the first round against Nuno Borges (6-2, 3-0 ret.).
Although he reached the final at the Indian Wells Masters 1000, Rune hasn’t necessarily shone in other tournaments this season, having been eliminated in the round of 16 at the Australian Open by Jannik Sinner.
Nevertheless, he remains confident about his level. Present in Barcelona, where he will make his debut against Albert Ramos-Viñolas, the Dane hopes to regain his best form very soon.
"In Monte-Carlo, I suffered from food poisoning. I love this tournament, but I was unlucky. It was very tough for me, as were the days that followed.
I resumed training a few days ago, and it wasn’t easy, but I’m happy to be back on the court and feeling good in my body. That’s a positive sign.
It’s quite frustrating, but I think you can learn from these situations. I did some tests afterward to see which foods I should eat and which I should avoid.
Maybe it’s just bad luck, but it’s very annoying, especially in a tournament like Monte-Carlo, where I’ve played well and enjoy competing. I’m trying to focus on the next goal, which is playing in Barcelona.
I’m still playing good tennis. My preparation before Monte-Carlo, before I got sick, was quite solid. I was playing well—I’m not overthinking my level, just focusing on the day-to-day work.
I’m confident. I know that if I’m physically fresh, I can return to my best level," the Dane explained in recent hours to *Punto De Break*.
