Ruud beats Medvedev for the first time and advances to the semifinals in Madrid
Ruud defeated Medvedev (6-3, 7-5) in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters 1000. This was the first time the two players had faced each other on clay.
Previously undefeated against the Norwegian in three encounters, the Russian suffered his first loss after 1 hour and 39 minutes of play. Inaccurate (33 unforced errors), the world No. 10 failed to break his opponent’s serve even once.
Meanwhile, Ruud converted a quarter of his break points (2/8) and won 76% of points on his first serve. He advances to his first semifinal in four years in Madrid and also extends his streak to seven consecutive Masters 1000 quarterfinal wins on clay.
Without dropping a set, the 26-year-old continues his run in the Spanish capital and secures a spot in the final four. He will face the winner of the match between Cerundolo and Mensik.
