Ruud on the Laver Cup: "I'm more stressed on the bench than on the court!"
Present for the fifth consecutive year at the Laver Cup, Casper Ruud is a veteran in the event alongside Zverev. But before the kickoff, the Norwegian made a surprising confession about what stresses him the most.
Casper Ruud is a regular at the Laver Cup. First called up in 2021, the world No. 12 has since attended every edition. His experience could help the newcomers on the team this year (Rune and Mensik).
Interviewed before the hostilities began on Friday, Ruud admitted to appreciating the competition format, although he says he's much more stressed on the bench than on the court:
"The first time I played, I loved it so much that I said to myself, 'If I have the opportunity, I would like to play every year.' It's the fifth time, and I believe that in the European team, only Sascha (Zverev) and I have played the most.
I don't consider myself above the others, but we have experience, that's for sure. I think it will be useful for the newcomers. And of course, last year, we had a phenomenal year when Carlos took responsibility and won the match for us.
Sometimes, it was really nerve-wracking to be sitting on the bench. I remember last year in Berlin. Everything came down to the last match and it was on the edge, with Carlos and Taylor fighting for the last points. I was more exhausted from watching tennis all afternoon than playing.
You're so into it and you wish the best for your teammate. The level of stress is very high, but it's fun."
