"Seeing him play on grass is a luxury," Wilander praises Alcaraz ahead of Wimbledon
Carlos Alcaraz is back at Wimbledon. The world No. 2, who just won Roland-Garros for the second time in a row, hopes to maintain this momentum on grass.
After claiming the ATP 500 Queen’s Club title, the Spaniard will compete over the next two weeks to try and win the London Grand Slam for the third consecutive time, having defeated Novak Djokovic in the final of the last two editions.
Former professional tennis player Mats Wilander analyzed Alcaraz’s game on grass, believing he has every chance to secure a sixth Grand Slam this July, as the surface suits him perfectly.
"Grass is the perfect surface for Alcaraz. First, because of how he moves on it. I think he’s the only player on tour who doesn’t see a huge difference in his movement, whether he’s playing on clay, grass, or hard courts.
Second, grass is a surface where you have the least to think about during rallies. You can hit plenty of slices, you try to survive in the exchanges, and when your opponent plays a slightly short ball, you can take advantage to attack.
It’s perfect for Alcaraz because there are fewer tactical patterns to use on grass compared to clay, and that suits him perfectly. I think he’s enjoying himself more and more when he plays on grass.
We can see the joy in his eyes, the incredible competitive spirit he has. For me, seeing him play on grass is a luxury," Wilander concluded in an interview with Tennis365.
