Alex De Minaur, who triumphed in Washington a week ago, secured his spot in the quarterfinals of the Toronto Masters 1000 by defeating Frances Tiafoe (6-2, 4-6, 6-4).

The Australian, who had an extra day of rest due to Christopher O’Connell’s withdrawal, knew he would need to bring his best tennis to overcome Tiafoe. The two players had not faced each other on tour in nearly three years.

While the match started entirely in De Minaur’s favor, as he quickly took a set and a break lead (6-2, 1-0), Tiafoe managed to regroup and break back immediately. Finding his rhythm, the American seized his first set point on De Minaur’s serve to claim the second set 6-4.

The third set was tightly contested, featuring some high-quality exchanges, but it was ultimately De Minaur who had the final say. At 4-4, 40-40, the world No. 8 crushed Tiafoe’s hopes with an incredible defensive point (see video below). He wasted no time converting the break point before sealing the match on Tiafoe’s 49th and final unforced error.

For his second Masters 1000 quarterfinal this season after Monte-Carlo, De Minaur will face either Flavio Cobolli or Ben Shelton.

Hello I'm new

I am surprised about relatively low attendance at Roland Garros which was the most popular slam 20+ years ago. I myself love it as well as really loving aus and us opens. I don't care about Wimbledon, sometimes maybe I can watch women's tennis. I hate Wimbledon's white dress code, I feel like I am watching junior tennis...I watched very few matches like Graf davenport final in 1999 the last time.....
